  1. Identification of woody shrub please

  2. Hope I can get some help with identifying the small woody shrub in the photos please, Located in Wellington city?
The leaf is 55mm long, with saw tooth edges and not very shiny. The roots are extremely deep, I hope to find out if it will regrow if I cut the root off as were laying grass over the top and dont want it coming through. The bottom of the hole is 1 meter below the new grass level - unlikely to grow that far up but still need id as it is elsewhere nearby. Thanks

  3. Hi George, you'll have to try uploading the photo again as it doesn't show in your post

  4. Hi Mike, hope this comes through..
    Thanks

  5. Thanks George, yep that shows nicely. Its an exotic species, but I don't know what it is. Hopefully someone else can help you further

  6. Another pic

  7. Hi George,
This looks like it could be grey willow (pussy willow) http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=2983
If it is, it won't sucker from the roots.
Grey willow is a distinctive plant so a photo of the whole plant would help. Depending on where you are, you could probably take a sample into the Botanical Gardens, a DOC office, a GWRC park ranger, or council pest officer for confirmation.

  8. Hi George,
For some reason I couldn't see your second pic. earlier Forget grey willow, this is a species of Chaenomeles (flowering or Japanese quince) compare the photos here
    http://www.discoverlife.org/mp/20q?search=Chaenomeles
If I was at home I could just go out and get some photos for you. Those leafy bracts either side of the leaf are very distinctive. Chaenomeles are very good at putting up root-suckers, Probably best to cut them back and paint each stump with a brush on gel formulated herbicide.
