  1. Vine Identification

  2. On banks peninsula. Wondering what it is and if anyone has any advice for getting rid of it?
    Many thanks,

  3. Another photo of the vine

  4. I can't see the foliage - can you supply some images of that? However, I suspect this is Muehlenbeckia australis (pohuehue) which is indigenous and semi-deciduous. It likes disturbed areas and can at times be a aggressive 'weedy' plant in urban situations. It often forms hybrids with tororaro (M. complexa) which can compound the 'weedy' nature.

Sorry I cannot advise on its control - beyond suggesting you hand pull it, or tolerate it as it attracts native butterflies (coppers especially) and lizards.

  5. According to expert comment and my experience herbicides don't affect M. complexa so that probably applies to others too. I agree with Peter that it can be weedy, but as it is native it deserves careful thought before destroying it.

  6. It is hit hard by woody weed herbicides (as you'd expect)

  7. Thanks, Mike. Can you tell me which one you'd use and would there be a residual effect in the soil?

  8. Hi Mike, I prefer just cutting main stem if control needed (such as swamping plantings or smothering rare plants). Its a symbol of poor ecosystem health (too much light due to canopy loss). I could find out the name of the herbicide (it wasn't me doing the spraying - it hit the Muehlenbeckia that was shading Simplicia plants I am monitoring)
