    Hi, this fern has been growing happily in a sheltered corner at our coastal home for 23 or so years but has over some months the fronds have begun turning black and much of the plant is now affected though there is new green growth. Last year we placed an empty water storage barrel in this corner - is it possible that this is having an effect?

    Hi Suzanne - as you live in Lower Hutt, Wellington my suggestion would be that you contact Dr Leon Perrie, Curator of Botany at Te Papa Tongarewa, MONZ for advice (LeonP@tepapa.govt.nz), Leon is a pteridologist and works with retired Asplenium expert Dr Patrick Brownsey - they are more likely than I to be able to help.
