  1. Flax Weevil

    In Canon Creek Porirua, a valley of flax has been hit by the flax weevil. My wife told me her marae was going to be harvesting flax there this weekend. What risk is there of the weevil being transferred to the gully of flax on the marae. I've told them not to dump any off cuts out the back of the marae. Should they avoid any transfer of product at all back to the marae?

    You should first determine what the weevil actually is. I suggest you send an email to Dr Thomas Buckley (buckleyt@landcareresearch.co.nz) and ask him for advice. In the interim I agree quarantine site. Also consider emailing Bernie Papa (bpapa@doc.govt.nz) who is a renowned flax weaver from Ngati Whatua and see what she says.
