  1. Fruiting tree on Te Ahumairangi, Wellington - what is it?

  2. There is a group of trees at the southern end of Te Ahumairangi (aka Tinakori Hill) in Wellington that I'm interested in identifying. The trees have a lot of fruit but are a bit hard to see because they are quite tall the fruit don't seem to fall at all. Tui seem to really enjoy these trees.

A lot of the fruit are redder than the picture would indicate.

  3. HI John, the photos need to be smaller than 500kb to load to this website. Could you please try again.

  4. Here is a photo of the fruit.

  5. Hi John, Not sure if your photo is of a smaple which is quite dessicated... If so, that is Cornus capitata - Strawberry dogwood. A pest plant which is fast growing and fruits heavily. A real pain to get rid, as I recall we had this issue in the Zealandia...

  6. Hi Matt,
I think you are on the right track. It seems more like the Korean Dogwood (Cornus kousa) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornus_kousa. There are photos on the wikipedia page that seem quite like the trees here.

A good photo of fruit here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Arbutusunedo03.jpg

There is mention of it in NZ blogs saying that tuis love them -- that would match the experience here in Wellington.

They seem to be mentioned for sale in NZ nurseries too. So not too far-fetched that they might spread to Zealandia and Te Ahumairangi from gardens.
