  1. ID seedling please

  2. The 2 small trilobate seedlings in the centre. Not the urtica on the left, the Rhabdo solandrii at top, the "pratia" creeper or the snail bait to keep the U. incisa alive, the seedlings. Vitex lucens?? Suburban Grey Lynn. Puriri nearby. I've had a sniff about for likely candidates but can't find a definitive. It's lovely when native things self set so I don't want to yoink it without knowing what it is.
    Any and all help appreciated.

  3. Kohekohe seedlings, not puriri

  4. Whaa? There's a juvenile Kohekohe right next to it but this year is the first year I've seen it flower.. or about to. Then again, there's no reason at all why the seeds couldn't have come from elsewhere of course. Thanks heaps.

  5. The clues are that the leaflets aren't properly palmate (coming out of one central point) but spaces along the stem a wee bit, the edges of the leaflets are not serrated finely enough and the leaflets are not as thin as puriri seedlings. Did my MSc on puriri and PhD on a whole bunch of species including puriri and kohekohe. All you need is only obliging seed disperser :-)

  6. Cool. Thanks heaps. A regeneration result of some sort, albeit small or doomed over the long term. Pukatea seedling coming up right next to it or am I mistaken?
Sawdust from lopped dead wineberry trunk if you're wondering.

  7. Pseudopanax seedling rather than pukatea I think. Both the kohekohe and pseudopanx are still small enough to transplant at this stage.

  8. A ha. I'll definitely transplant the Kohekohe to somewhere that gives them hope.
    Thanks.

  9. Astrid knows! Puriri seedlings are pretty uncommon in my experience. I found of the characters that Astrid gives that the membranous serrate leaf was the most obvious (think wineberry leaf for puriri leaflets). Kohekohe seedlings are thicker (they bend at the petiole when pushed down by a finger near the leaf tip), not saw-toothed and are shiny. A guide to seedlings of NZ trees would be very helpful!
