hi there how wide does this tree/shrub grow please
In the wild it grows to about a 4m diameter crown. Not sure if it grows much bigger in cultivation
Elingamita johnsonii is frost tender. It does well in partial shade (or in a sheltered place) in full sun. There are male and female plants (though females set a little seed) but to acheive good fruit set you need both genders. Seed germinates easily enough but may take a year from sowing (remove flesh first). In the wild on the Three Kings it grows as a subcanopy tree on West Island and as part of the canopy on Hinemoa and Arbutus Rocks. I have no trouble growing it in Auckland. But it is rather slow growing. It makes an excellent tub plant. Ciao
In our tree nursery in Matakana, elingamita has been one of the slowest growing trees, in bags. Nice foliage, very like karaka, the wood is quite fleshy. Not convinced it is a tree for everyone's use....
