    Which of the Orach - Atriplex family can be eaten? We have a grey leafed plant that has arrived on Herald Island and considered a weed. Atriplex patula or prostrata, possibly. Looks like Fat hen and looks eatable. Is it? We try to control it by pulling it out but it is gaining.

    Technically all of our wild Atriplex are edible - your one is probably A. prostrata because A. patula in the strict sense is very uncommon in New Zealand. I have eaten this species myself but find little to commend it. My advice is to eat young growth that has been carefully cleaned.
