  1. Senecio lautus

  2. Hi,
I was looking for Senecio lautus out at Island Bay and Red Rocks but I did not seem to come across any. However, I came across a plant that was vaguely familiar. I am not sure if this is the boneseed Chrysanthemoides monilifera? Can someone help me out? Thanks!

  3. This is Senecio skirrhodon - a South African species often mistaken for Senecio lautus. It is much larger than S. lautus, with less divided leaves and it is more common in urban areas than 'natural' habitats (though it is spreading now into these)

  4. Thank you Peter. Senecio lautus proved to be more elusive than I thought. I imagined as a weed, it would be all over the coast.

  5. Strange, Senecio lautus was common in the Red Rocks area a couple of years ago. Look on rocky outcrops and bare areas

  6. Hi Mike. Yeah I was also told it is very common. I will wait until spring and see if I have any luck. After an initial survey along part of the coast, it seems that the majority of the weeds are now Cakile edentula, Cakile maritima and Raphanus raphanistrum. By the way, my name is Ganges and I am a PhD student at Victoria. No idea why my name is default as Victoria university though. Thanks for the information everyone.

  7. Ganges,
The reason you appear as Victoria University is that the Library has taken out a membership and I assume you were using a Library computer.

  8. Hi Eric. Yup its likely but I am using a computer assigned to me in the school. But that's alright. I will just have to remember to sign off at the end of the post. Have a great day folks! I will be out at the south coast again next week and let's see if I can find anymore of this elusive weed.
