  1. Is it possible to completely eradicate a species of environmental weed in New Zealand?

  2. I was wondering what people thought about this? I think with a systematic approach involving community volunteers and a phone app that uses GPS points where the weed has been found and has been controlled etc, it would be possible to completely eradicate a weed from New Zealand over a 10 year period. Possible weeds could be woolly nightshade (obvious to spot and relatively easy to kill) or moth plant (easy for locals to pull up roots and leave to die in tree). The phone app would allow everyone to see what areas have been controlled and what still needs to be controlled. If possible, this would be extremely satisfying and over time save money for the future generations who would no longer need to control this particular species.

  3. Hi Peter, eradication would be a slim possibility, depending on the species. However I think its a great idea for achieving meaningful control of some weed species. Do you know of such an app?

  4. Hi Mark, thanks for that. No I don't think there is one as far as I know, it will need to be developed. The main issue will be that it requires a decent uptake of the public using it in order to be effective. I will think about it some more...
