  1. South Island plants

  2. Kia ora everyone, I have an odd request but am hoping someone or some few people out there can help me out.

I will be part of a small team heading down and around the South Island to carry out flora and fauna monitoring in several areas.

As the team and I are based in the North Island we're quite unfamiliar with plants that can be found in the south. We have spent the last few weeks looking for plant lists representative of the areas we will be visiting and reading up with what limited material we have available. There isn't enough information (for us) to get a clear picture of what to expect whilst down there.

So I'm wondering if someone can help us out or provide plant lists or at the least an idea of what we can expect?

The areas we will be visiting are:

    Small wetland near Nelson
    Coastal bush near Kaikoura
    Coastal hillside at Banks Peninsula
Coastal bush on the banks of the Wairaurahiri river
    Coastal west coast forest
Old flood plain forest on the Paringa river b

  3. A number of species lists are available on this website http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/factsheet_index.aspx
The library at Landcare Research, Lincoln holds all of Tony Druce's field lists and it seems he got to a lot of places https://http://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/publications/library
Also through Landcare Research you can access species lists from the old NIVS dataset - rebranded NVS (National Vegetation Survey). These are the results of the network of permanent 20m x 20m vegetation plots distributed across NZ. https://http://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/resources/data/national-vegetation-survey-nvs
Looks like your sites are all lowland so you'll find Hugh Wilson's Stewart Island Plants an invaluable tool throughout.
While I haven't seen it Plant life on Banks Peninsula, also by Hugh Wilson, is highly recommended http://www.manukapress.co.nz/Plant_Life_on_Banks_Peninsula.htm

  4. Thanks for the info Graeme, much appreciated and has pointed me in a good direction for what to expect.
