  1. Olearia rani var. colorata

  2. I have several plants obtained from the back of our farm in Whitianga, Coromandel Peninsula and the closest I can come to identifying it is the Oleria rani colorata but the leaves to all mine are quite a definite purple colour. The underside is white. We can't identify it from any of the books we have. Any suggestions?

  3. Hi Can you please provide a photo, it will help with ID. Photo needs to be less than 500kb to be able to load

  4. Olearia rani var. rani has a circular leaf which usually lacks purple spotting - see http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/1334738 and http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/4503466 Olearia rani var. colorata has a longer less distinctly rounded leaf with prominent purple spotting on the upper surface. In the Coromandel area both varieties occur and intergrade (especially around Kauaeranga Valley) so Astrid is correct - we need to see images of the leaves (top side and bottom side) to help you.

  5. The images Astrid passed me are too small but one of them looks suspiciously like Brachyglottis myrianthos - another distinct possibility. For this species see http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/2456000 and http://naturewatch.org.nz/observations/2462384 (also http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=377). It is locally common in some stream systems of the Coromandel Peninsula. This is a small shrub with leaves that looks very like Olearia rani s.l. If you have the time please send larger images to me at pdelange@unitec.ac.nz
