  1. Holes on Kohekohe trunks.

    What is the cause of these holes on the trunks of Kohekohe trees? This one particularly spectacular but similar lesser damage on a number of others. This tree appears severely damaged with part of it dead.

    There are a number of insects that can cause holes in trunks including puriri moth and stick insects, and some native bird species such as kaka will also gnaw holes to get at invertebrates. Suggest that you post this photo and question on iNaturalist.nz and somebody there might be able to identify the critter.
