  1. ID of fallen tree

  2. I did write a reply here it mustn't yet be approved. I thought it would be tall for a pittosproum but that is the consensus around here too. The ag beam in the photo is 2 meters off the ground so it is at least 8 meters I'd think.

  3. I tend to agree with Graeme and that it is a mangeao - http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=940 it doesn't look like a pitto to me

  4. On closer inspection I also agree with Graeme and Astrid - mangeao. I'd jsut been looking at P. tenuifolium and P. colensoi so was a bit distracted. The drip-tip in particular gives it away, together with leaf size relative to the hand. Some Pittosporum species can grow to more than 8 meters though.

  5. Sorry to dig up a dead thread! I've been overseas the last couple of months and just gotten around to looking at the fallen tree now. I've cut into it and taken a couple of photos, would it shed any light on the certainty of its species?

It has a faint but unmistakable sweet smell, almost like nutty honey I suppose. If it is mangeao I'm considering milling it rather than ringing it for firewood. Is there someway I can have a sample identified?

    Thanks again!
