  1. Myoporum laetum

  2. How can I tell the difference between NZ Ngaio & Tasmanian?

  3. Hi Mike - the difference are outlined in the Fact Sheets under M. aff. insulare and M. laetum. The most simple way is to look at the leaf buds - if brown to dark brown and sticky then you have M. laetum if green to yellow green then M. aff. insulare. The leaf glands (spots) are also diagnostic - extremely obvious in M. laetum scarcely so in M. aff. insulare. The stems of M. laetum are covered in warty protuberances, those of M. aff insulare are smooth. But watch out these two hybridize.

  4. Hi Mike, I use the following
    1) growing tips are brownish/purple in colour and sticky to the touch
    2) the foliage is much more spotty looking than for the Tasmanian version
    3) Ngaio has serrated gland-spotted leaves.
Unfortunately where they occur together you can get hybrids between the two
