  1. ID of this weed.

  2. Growing next to Weedons NZMCA Park, Christchurch

  3. Plant

  4. Leaf

  5. Paddock

  6. Hi Phil, looks like either Hypochoeris glabra or Scorzoneroides autumnalis. But species in this section of the Asteraceae need close examination of the inflorescence and achenes to ID.

  7. Thanks Mike I now see why I have problems in IDs these species

  8. It doesn't help that they are variable in appearance depending on shading, moisture and fertility! The Illustrated Guide to Common Weeds is a good start, but needs to be used in conjunction with Flora IV to see what other similar species are around. They can be conspicuous weeds of some places - such as in your photos.

  9. Crepis foetida subsp. foestida - see http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/flora_details.aspx?ID=3737 - its more common in the south eastern North Island but I have seen, and collected it from Canterbury

  10. Peter, why not C. vesicaria? Whenever I endeavor to ID similar plants here in Canterbury I end up at C. vesicaria, of course I could be getting it wrong.

  11. Probably - I prefer specimens than images in this group. What I really wanted to say is that this is not Hypochoeris glabra or Scorzoneroides autumnalis its Crepis
