  1. Pseudowintera colorata - horopito

  2. I have starting using horopito in my cooking (as i live in horopito the town and it is abundant) I have however been sent a letter by a Maori local that I am taking native "rongoa" and i've taken it without "tikanga" principles being followed??? am i breaking any laws or moral boundaries? I would hate to cause offence, i just liked the taste and cook with it.

  3. HI Dean, it is something you need to talk with them about. Yes, it is used as rongoa (medicine) and there are tikanga (protocols) associated with that use. I think you will find it interesting to talk to them

  4. Hi Dean, if you are growing the plants yourself and using the leaves in your own way (simply for flavour and spice in cooking), then it is a simpler matter (essentially confined to you grabbing a few leaves within your private garden). If you are collecting leaves from plants that you haven't cultivated (growing in the wild) and/or you are using them in a way that is consistent with established rongoa (medicinal), then that potentially invites comment. The easiest solution would be to grow some of your own plants (you can buy them from a number of nurseries), which will undoubtedly thrive.
