  1. Pittosporum Umbellatum/Ralphii/Crassifolium

  2. Am I right in that the first is P Umbellatum, the 2nd is P Ralphii and the third is P Crassifolium. The 2nd and 3rd have tomentum on the underside. Took me a while to notice the elliptical nature of the P Ralphii leaves

  3. From left to right. I cannot confirm the first - it may be P. tenuifolium (it is not what I would call typical P. umbellatum). The 2nd is almost certainly P. ralphii (slight chance it is P. huttonianum) and the 3rd is P. crassifolium. Accurate identification from single leaves is not generally easy.

  4. Thanks Peter, well spotted. The leaves are fragrant when crushed. I should have noticed that. Are P umbellatum typically not undulate and closer in shape to the P Ralphii ? Photo of a spray attached

  5. This is Pittosporum umbellatum - I will load up in batches

  6. This is Pittosporum umbellatum showing the leaf undersides. Not the 'reddish purple" petiole (I am colour blind so that is how I see it) but its diagnostic, also if you look closely with a hand lense this species usually has reddish hairs on the young growth, petioles, stems etc.

  7. Curses - here is the image

  8. Young growth of Pittosporum umbellatum

  9. Finally looking at your 'spray' of foliage - that's not P. umbellatum as the tomentum on the leaves is greyish to white rather than dark red-brown. From what I can see I think your plant is P. colensoi. All Pittosporum foliage is aromatic when crushed, indeed the crush leaves of some, such as tarata / lomonwood (Pittosporum eugenoides) were even used by Maori as a body wash / scent.

  10. These pittosporums are hard work! Thanks for this, there is enough there for me to be able to pick them now I expect but I'll need to digest this. That comment re the red petiole is very helpful

  11. Thanks Peter you are a Champ!
