This was found in the lowland hills above Wairoa East Coast NI. Any ideas?
Another show showing the leaves
There looks to be two species here - the first photo looks like the flowering stalk of Acaena agnipila and the second pic appears to be a species of Drosera.
Acaena agnipila is also known as sheep's bur and is an exotic plant. The Drosera is a fly-catching plant and probably native (depending on the species :-) ) http://www.nzpcn.org.nz/flora_search.aspx?scfSubmit=1&scfStart_Results=&scfFlora_Category=&scfLatin_Name=drosera&scfCommon_Name=&scfFamily_Name=&scfDistrict=&scfAncestry=&scfFlora_Structural_Class=&scfFlora_Status=
There are two different plants there, Malcolm; the second photo being a Drosera. The first one might be a weedy Plantago or Sanguisorba, but somebody else will undoubtedly know that much better.
There you go, Malcolm. Three answers simultaneously. John'll no doubt see you right with that.
Thanks all - The Acaena agnipila is a new one for me. Apologies - I uploaded the wrong image (looking at a busy green thumbnail) - it should have been this one (which also has a drosera photobomb, but shows the leaves of the Acaena agnipila....)
The second image is Drosera auriculata - if people wanted to know
Thanks Peter - I wasn't brave enough to stick my neck out on the Drosera ;-)
There's loads of Acaena agnipila down south, Malcolm; especially in dry areas. It's a real pain when you're walking through some pasture, for obvious reasons.
