  1. N. Lanceolata or n. Montana ?

  2. Hi, this is from a juvenile tree so I wasn't sure if it is a young n. Lanceloata leaf or n. Montana. Any help on how I can tell the two apart would be really appreciated.

  3. Its either Nestegis cunninghamii or N. lanceolata - can you pelase show an image of the underside of the leaves OR tell me if the side veins are obvious when you hold the leaf up to the light?

  4. I can't see any side veins so does that make it n. Lanceolata? Btw what marks it out as not being n. Montana ?

  5. Leaves way way too wide for N. montana - as judged by your pen scale. As side veins not obvious this is Nestegis lanceolata

  6. Thanks Peter, that's v helpful. I don't see this tree much in Wellington so I haven't a lot of reference points. Btw I had a day off so did a lot of wandering today, do you know if this is weinmannia silvicola?

  8. Was this Weinmannia planted? It is W. silvicola and that is not indigenous to Wellington - it doesn't occur south of the Manukau Harbour (in the west) - Kauaeranga (near Thames) Valley in the East

  9. BTW Nestegis montana is VERY uncommon around Wellington. I knew of Trees in a gully near Porirua High School (in 1990) and near Makara. Nestegis lanceolata is more common - locally abundant in the Rimutaka Ranges and in places around Upper Hutt.

  10. That's very helpful Peter, thanks. The Weinmannia is at Otari Reserve as was the Nestegis lanceolata. As I am getting to grips with the native plants I am hampered a little by only seeing what I can find in Wgtn and for the plants not native to here, that means isolated instances, typically at Otari for natives and the botanical garden for exotics. I am planning to include arrange some trips around the country, any suggestions for good places to visit ?
