  1. a new weedy daisy for me

  2. just 2 plants growing in vacant lot near Whanganui's main street, in gravel; area used partly as temporary carpark. Ligulate florets prob open widely (today is overcast & showery). Has a bit of look of a small Leucanthemum vulgare but ligulate florets are cream, leaves almost succulent; pink stem bases. Inner phyllaries with translucent margins, the rest green with purple margins. Colin

  3. Sorry, only 1/3 of my (poor) photos came first time. Here's the flower head.

  4. HI Colin, I can't ID for you, but great to see your great images. Have a great weekend :-)

  5. A bit more searching has revealed a possible name, Coleostephus myconis. How does that sound? I have also taken some better photos now, if anyone wants to see them. Colin

  6. Hi Colin, well spotted. No idea what it is though. Strange how many new weed records come from the Whanganui area!

  7. Thanks for your comment Mike. The plant has been posted fresh to CHR, but I'm now fairly sure that it's Coleostephus myconis. I don't think Whanganui is any weedier than most other long-settled places in NZ. It's a case of living in one place long enough through all seasons so as to get to know the adventive flora. Then it's easier to spot uncommon or new wild plants. Botanists could (should?) be doing this all around NZ!

  8. Heartily agree Colin. In my opinion to be considered a botanist you should be collecting regularly - weeds and natives. Herbaria are becoming biased towards the rare an unusual and there is scarily little representation by good examples of commoner plants
