  1. Plant identification 3

  2. Any idea on this one. The leaves have the same colour and texture as Corynocarpus laevigatus but are sharply toothed. Is it some kind of pseudopanax hybrid ?

  3. Yes - this is indeed a Pseudopanax. It is the hybrid that is often sold as P. crassifolius 'sabre'. You see it occasionally in the wild and it is reputedly another variant of P. crassifolius x P. lessonii.

  4. Thanks Peter, and for your answers to my other questions. I have seen quite a few of these hybrids but none looking like this one. BTW could you tell me the name of the thicker vine in the attached photo. I see a lot of it and the Ripogonum scandens which is growing around it but these sort of plants aren't in the reference books I have available

  5. Without leaves I would only be guessing - sorry cannot help you further

  6. Rhys,
Regarding the vine it could be Parsonsia or native passion fruit or lawyer. It's unlikely to be Muehlenbeckia as they are usually dark and fibrous at this size. Definitely not rata and you can exclude Clematis (native or exotic) as the native have distinctive swellings at the nodes and the exotic ones are quite shaggy

  7. Hi Rhys, it looks like supple jack to me, have a look at the page, and see if it matches

  8. Oops I should read a bity more thoroughly, I agree with Graeme.

  9. Thanks so much for the help. I didn't realise there were so many vine options. I went back to the area (Otari Reserve) and asked and they said it was, as you mention, passiflora tetrandra. it did look like the following photo

Am I right in assuming that the others you mention are the most common ? What I will do is learn to recognise the most common and manage the others by exception. I am a bit restricted as if it isn't in Wgtn I don't see it although I am lucky to live close to Otari.

    Thanks
    Rhys
